Hi {{first_name}}

You felt lighter over the break.

Easier. More yourself.

Then you walked back through the office door - and that tightness returned.

Not stress. Not overwhelm.

Something deeper: a quiet shift back into who you used to be.

If you've noticed yourself feeling slightly tighter, less at ease, or more constricted in those first days back, this is for you.

THE PATTERN YOU'RE FEELING

The calendar fills quickly.

Meetings you haven't thought about in weeks reappear.

Conversations resume where they left off.

Nothing has gone wrong.

And yet, something changes inside.

The ease felt over the break begins to fade.

Shoulders lift.

Thinking narrows slightly.

You find yourself preparing, performing, or bracing in ways you didn't need to a fortnight ago.

Most leaders don't name this.

They assume: "This is just what work feels like."

But that assumption is where the Mask quietly steps back in - that fear-based pattern in your mind that limits your leadership by restricting you to old, outdated thought-patterns and responses. (See ‘What is the Mask’ section below if you are new to this newsletter).

WHY THIS HAPPENS

Familiar Spaces Reactivate Old Patterns

Returning to the office isn't just a logistical transition.

It's a psychological one.

Workplaces carry memory.

The expectations you've navigated. The power dynamics you've learned. The roles you've played.

When you step back into those environments, the nervous system recognises them instantly - long before your conscious mind can respond.

The Mask is on High Alert

The Mask doesn't appear because of incapability or lack of preparation.

It appears because the context has changed and it is on high alert.

The Mask reactivates in familiar territory, pulling you back toward outdated patterns and limiting beliefs.

The problem isn't the reaction.

The problem is mistaking The Mask for who you are.

THE REFRAME THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Feeling different at work doesn't mean you've lost confidence.

The break didn't "undo" any progress.

Nothing is wrong with you.

What's happening is this: the environment has triggered an unconscious pattern.

Quick Self-Check: Which Pattern Are You Experiencing?

-        Tightening shoulders and shallow breathing when the calendar fills

-        Second-guessing decisions you made easily during the break

-        Performing confidence rather than feeling it

-        Preparing excessively for routine interactions

-        Feeling like you need to "switch on" a leadership persona

If you recognise some of these common reactions, the Mask may have quietly stepped back in.

THE 3Rs IN ACTION

Leadership doesn't require you to eliminate the Mask (that’s not possible).

It requires you to stop letting it impersonate you.

The 3Rs framework quietly restore balance:

Realise

The tightness felt isn't any sign of weakness - it's the Mask putting your nervous system on high alert as it expects perceived psychological ‘danger’ from the working environment.

Name it: "This is The Mask reacting to its old patterns of fear, not truth about who I am."

Awareness alone interrupts the Mask's momentum.

Reject

The assumption that you need to "switch on" to lead effectively.

The break didn't undo capability - it revealed what's possible when fear isn't steering.

Just because a thought or feeling arrives doesn't mean it deserves authority.

Respond

Before the first meeting, take three conscious breaths.

Ask: "How would I show up if I weren't trying to prove anything?"

Then lead from there.

Choose how to lead this moment - not by force, but by presence.

Slower. Clearer. More deliberate.

60-SECOND PRACTICE

Try this once a day during the first week back:

Catch the moment you feel yourself "switch on" or tighten. This is your first sign The Mask is taking control of your identity.

Say internally: "This is a familiar pattern reactivating."

Ask: "How would I lead this moment if I wasn't operating from fear?"

One conscious choice is enough.

You don't need to fix the week.

You just need to stay awake inside it.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Returning to the office doesn't require a stronger version of you.

It requires a more conscious one.

The calm felt over the break hasn't disappeared.

It's still there waiting to be chosen again.

That is how leaders re-enter work without losing themselves.

What is "The Mask"?

The Mask is the name I give to an invisible, fictional character of the mind that operates entirely from fear. It offers thoughts, feelings, and actions you wouldn't consciously choose for yourself, limiting your leadership by restricting you to outdated, fear-based patterns. The Mask is not you. You are the conscious observer who can recognise it, reject what it offers, and respond with authentic choice instead.

If you're curious which Leadership Mask tends to reactivate first when you return to familiar pressure, you can explore it through the free Leadership Mask assessment.

Or, reflect:

What do you notice changing in yourself during the first week back and what helps you stay grounded?
